Dynex Capital (DX) Analyst Ratings
Bulls say
Dynex Cap is supported by improving earnings power, with EAD rising to $0.38 from $0.36 and NII increasing 8% to $101.6mm on a 10% larger average interest-earning asset base, while operating expenses fell $4mm quarter over quarter. Its agency-focused portfolio and disciplined risk management also helped preserve economics: the net interest spread widened to 118bp, asset yield rose to 500bp, and forward ROEs of roughly 20% to 25% suggest strong reinvestment returns despite higher repo costs. Management’s confidence in dividend coverage is reinforced by EAD covering about 75% of the $0.51 dividend, book value stabilizing at an estimated $10.95 net of accrued dividend as of 10/16, and robust financing conditions with repo spreads near multi-year tights.
Bears say
Dynex Cap is viewed negatively because late-quarter volatility and wider Agency MBS spreads drove a 15% book value decline, cutting BVPS by $1.99 to $10.91 and producing a (11.5)% total economic return. The firm also chose to lever into the drawdown, expanding the portfolio 3% to $28.3B, lifting leverage to 9.0x from 8.1x, and funding with $268mm of common ATM plus a $120mm preferred issuance at a 9.375% coupon, which increases fixed claims on common equity. With interest-rate volatility, prepayment risk, and spread widening still threatening net asset value and funding costs, the balance sheet appears highly exposed despite hedges offsetting about 70% of asset repricing.
